Journey to the Sinking Lands

A witness to the world's first evacuation of an entire people due to climate change

(Not) refugees

You’ve probably noticed the words “the world’s first climate change refugees” up there in the header to this blog. I wrote that when I first set this blog up.  Now, as it turns out, I realise they are wrong (and I can’t work out how to change them. anyone who does know their way around WordPress and has a suggestion, please get in touch). It’s not that the situation on the Carterets has changed – the sea-level is rising, the people are being evacuated – it’s more the words themselves. ‘Climate change refugee’ might not actually mean anything after all. I’m as surprised by this as anyone.

There is more detail on this elsewhere on the blog; to find it click on ‘What is a climate change refugee?’ in the column on the right.
